Description ( terms, comments follow):
Original Eterna P 10 chronograph Automatic designed by the Porsche Design Firm, in stainless steel, with stainless bracelet, box and packaging as seen in the photographs. The movement is a Eterna's Valjoux 7750 automatic, which I have found to be the most dependable and serviceable if necessary. Both accurate & sturdy. (Handsome with other bands ... but here you have the major one with all the links.)
Porsche Design is an industrial design firm, assembled independently and located in Austria by Dr. F A Porsche after he left the Porsche Car company in 1972. PD is both a design and engineering firm, FA Porsche being the designer of the Porsche 911. Porsche design's first project was chronograph 1, typical name for engineering projects with a manufacturing history experimenting with materials and coatings. The project was to create a black military watch for NATO.
As an industrial design firm, PD entered into 12 to 20 year contractual partnerships with dependable and time-tested watch manufacturing concerns for their innovative designs. Through F A Porsche's lifetime three Swiss firms, of international reputation, built the watches. Orfina watch company , 72-78. IWC (International Watch Company) 78-98, Eterna Watch Company 98-2014. The watches were sold through the Swiss watch companies authorized network - guaranteed and serviced according to the watch company's practice and world wide reputation as watch makers for generations . Very different from standard marketing stuff by car companies or fashion designers. They are collectible as both fine Swiss mechanical watches and historic industrial design.
My first Porsche design watch arrived while working on NATO projects while at the Philadelphia Inquirer Magazine in the early 70s. I still have it. In those days, traveling journalists utilized expensive Swiss watches both for keeping time, and sometimes more importantly to buy your way out of a bad trouble. As Porsche design worked through the well-known Swiss watch companies, attended by them for the dependability as well as, ability to wear from planes to boardrooms. This watch was one of the first designs presented through the Eterna watch company. . A known innovator. I see it's relationship to the old Rolex Daytona and the simplicity of the Porsche automobile gauges, also designed by FA Porsche. Comfortable readable, presentable, tasteful and as FA Porsche was fond of saying: "designed as companions through life." Always liked that because it was true. The design has been retired.
I bought the watch through eBay, out of Chicago, if memory serves, from a watchmakers shop retiring. Is in perfect condition, it looks new, only with the slight handling marks from demonstration on the band, that in the old days the watchmaker would polish off upon purchase. (This was a small watchmakers shop that did not operate like Amazon, repairing watches and having perhaps a dozen fine watches in inventory. ) I've over lit a few of these so you can see. Nothing I'd be surprised at on a new watch. Watchmakers polish or even toothpaste (my life spent in hotel rooms).
Wore it once to a formal dance with tux. Clearly a gentle circumstance. A few weeks later I ran into the heritage version of "Chronograph 1" in titanium in San Francisco. Has entirely the same movement, & as I like the titanium that became my daily work watch. I also have an IWC Flieger in zirconium black ceramic that is very similar in size and shape to the P 10... So this went into my vault to be checked and wound regularly. Have wound it and is running well over the last week. W/o the others, would have worn this.
40mm, screw down crown, sleeved plungers, clean & clear. An Eterna watch. Eterna's finish on a 7750 Chronograph movement. With the top of the line stainless bracelet ... similar to the IWC design.
A final note for our time... FA Porsche passed in 2012 ... at the end of the Eterna contract (2014) it was not renewed nor did PD as a corporation appear to seek partnership with another famed Swiss Watch maker of their caliber.. To my eye, as someone who has dealt with designers and designed myself ... in today's models, I see more decoration than the signature of purpose I'd expect from an industrial design firm that has produced innovation from the first Black Watch, first titanium watch, etc with fabled movements from Valjoux, Lemania, & Jaeger Le couture all timed and refined by the 3 major Swiss Watch Companies. Again this is a mint Eterna Automatic Chronograph watch conceptualized by Porsche Design as Industrial designers. there is value & identity in that. These are the notable ones.
