Chanel J12 White Ceramic Quartz 2 Row Diamond Bezel Ref: DM1866 Paris
Item History & Price
this is an interesting one. MAKE EXTRA SURE TO READ AND UNDERSTAND THE ENTIRE AD BEFORE BIDDING. *i borrowed the excellent picture of the movement itself from another recent listing of a very similar, if not identical (in features and movement) J12. thanks to the person for taking the picture i couldn’t* over all this watch is in excellent physical, non running condition. i believe the ...crown is loose or something because it wants to tick. the ceramic is shiny. the case is chipped on one side at the attachment point of the bracelet (see pictures). it’s not immediately noticeable to me and it doesn’t interfere with the functionality or wearability at all. it’s heavy and substantial. the butterfly closure is secure and snaps positively open and closed. the bezel is beautiful and bright. the crown is not doing it’s job though. the end piece isn’t exactly pearly white either, not sure why. maybe it’s replaced? it seems like it belongs to the watch but it’s just off color wise. maybe i’m colorblind. i don’t think it’s attached to the movement correctly? i can adjust the date with the first click like it should. but the second click to adjust the time does not move the hands and feels loose and disconnected. if i wiggle the crown around, i can get it to tick a few seconds before it stops again. i know the movement has been replaced with a japanese movement instead of the swiss movement that should come with the watch (see pictures). i would consider this J12 a MOVIE PROP and should be valued accordingly. with this in mind, it’s up to you to decide the authenticity of this particular J12. i have taken this into account by using an auction style format. with the quality of everything you can see and feel, this is a great opportunity to own an awesome J12 at a fraction of the retail price. this J12 is almost there, imo. a few adjustments and you have a banger of a watch. it feels great on the wrist and shiny like it hasn’t seen a lot of time being worn. i don’t know what separates this one from one with a swiss movement just by look and feel. it’s a quality watch.
MY OPINION / UNNECESSARY RAMBLING quartz movements are accurate and function identically no matter where they come from. simplicity and uniformity is the point of quartz watch technology. they are going to be more accurate than any mechanical automatic out there. the only real difference between a swiss quartz from a respected company and a mass produced quartz in a casio, is the swiss quartz is shiny and probably serviceable when the other is usually not. the ability to service a movement is neat for sure. it’s possible to keep it running indefinitely by paying a technician a lot of money to grease things up every so often. that does appeal to me in a weird way. however, quartz are just ridiculously reliable and work quite happily with no service needed for literally decades. swap the battery every few years and you’re back in business. if it ever does legitimately not run anymore, buy another quartz movement for $10 and have someone that knows a thing or two to swap it out for you. i looked at this process on youtube. i don’t see it being very expensive to get done right. two digit numbers? i’m not a watchmaker. i would think it’s possible to drop off the watch and run a few errands and then pick it up same day. then you’re good to go for the next 30-40 years. you are more likely to get tired of the watch before it breaks. i can’t deny the craftsmanship and quality of parts that go into a big name quartz movement. they are excellent. but it’s not anything close to the difference between a good automatic and an adequate one. it’s something you never see or even think about really. the hands move identically, both keep perfect time, so there’s no big reason to pay more for one over the other. how many rolex, omega, etc do you see with quartz movements? very, very few because part of the luxury is the movement itself. practically all are mechanical automatics that take a lot of engineering to get right. i find it surprising that chanel offers a quartz J12 as an option given the price tag and exclusivity, but what do i know. don’t be suckered into paying out the nose for a quartz movement when you can get the part you really want for substantially less. this J12 is a quality piece apparent from the moment i held it in my hand. time and thought went into it’s construction. i appreciate things that i can see and feel over something on a spec sheet i have to take as truth because i will most likely never see for myself. the movement in this J12 is identical in terms of its functionality to any other J12. the only way to tell for sure is to open it up and look at the insides. that says a lot to me. you can decide what it says to you.
