AN EXQUISITE Late 18TH CENTURY/ Early 19th Century FRENCH MANTEL CLOCK DEPICTING THE ROMAN GODDESS DIANA, WHO IS GODDESS OF THE HUNT, MOON, NATURE, CHILDREN AND FERTILITY. SHE IS SEEN AWAKENING, RESTING ON THE MOON WHICH FUNCTIONS AS THE CLOCK. THE HANDS OF THE CLOCK ARE IN THE FORM OF SERPENTS. A SMALL CHILD IS HOLDING A TORCH OF LIGHT AS THE SUN RISES. THE ROOSTER IS CROWING AS DAWN APPROACHES. DIANA IS DEPICTED IN NUDE FORM, ELEGANT AND BEAUTIFUL, SWORN TO NEVER MARRY, SLOWLY AWAKEN...ING TO THE NEW DAY.  THE QUALITY OF THE SCULPTING AND ORMOLU IS OF EXTRAORDINARY WORKMANSHIP. THE FACE OF DIANA IS TRULY MAGNIFICENT IN ITS BEAUTY. THE SCULPTURE/ORMOLU OVERALL IS OF THE FINEST QUALITY. ALL OF THE ROMAN NUMERALS ON THE CLOCK ARE INTACT, NONE ARE MISSING. 
THE CLOCK HAS ACQUIRED AN ELEGANT PATINA OVER THE PAST 175 TO  200 YEARS. IT RESTS ON A MARBLE BASE. THE PIECE IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION EXCEPT FOR A SMALL SQUARE OF ORMOLU, 20 PERCENT THE SIZE OF A STAMP, IN THE REAR OF THE CLOCK THAT CAN BE RECAST FROM THE OTHER THREE IDENTICAL PIECES. PLEASE LOOK AT THE LAST TWO PHOTOGRAPHS. THE CLOCK LIKE ALL TIME PIECES SHOULD BE SERVICED. IT IS A MANTEL CLOCK BUT IS SUITABLE ON ANY TABLE. ITS SIZE BEING 8.5 INCHES HIGH BY 4.5 INCHES WIDE. IT HAS AN R AND A INSIDE THE CLOCK MECHANISM, FRENCH FOR RETARDER AND AVANCER, THAT IS SLOW DOWN OR SPEED UP.  PLEASE LOOK AT THE QUALITY OF THE ORMOLU ON THIS PIECE.
