A very interesting piece of artwork signed by Ian Spurling (1937-1996) for 'La Fin du jour' in 1979. This was a one-act ballet created by Kenneth MacMillan for the Royal Ballet, London. The music is Maurice Ravel's Piano Concerto in G (1931).
In MacMillan's words, "La Fin du jour draws its inspiration from the style of the 'thirties'; the designs and choreography are inspired by the fashion plates of an era and a way of life shattered forever by the Second World War."
The first performance was at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden on 15 March 1979. The leading roles were danced by Merle Park, Jennifer Penney, Julian Hosking and Wayne Eagling. The solo pianist was Philip Gammon, the conductor was Ashley Lawrence.
Ian Spurling designed several ballets for The Royal Ballet and The Birmingham Royal Ballet, notably those of Kenneth MacMillan and David Bintley. He was born in South Australia and studied in Adelaide and at the Slade School of Art, London. He worked in the Costume Department of The Royal Ballet whilst also designing for ballet and opera companies around the world including, 'The Seven Deadly Sins' (Western Theatre Ballet, The Royal Ballet), 'La Fin du Jour' and 'Danses Concertantes' (The Royal Ballet). He also designed costumes for the late Freddie Mercury. As you can see this is framed, signed and dated. Apologies for any reflection seen in the photos.
Measurements: overall it is 23.5inches wide by 19.5inches high, the artwork itself is 16.5inches wide by 11.5inches high.Condition: Fairly good - as you can see the frame is a little tatty (and loose), I am happy to take out to make shipping easier, the artwork has been mounted and so in each corner the square marks are visible - please see all photos.Weight without packaging: approx 2.8kg. Note that this will be shipped between card with the UK only, if overseas I will have no option but to take out of frame and also cut down the mount as glass/frame/mount makes this too heavy and big (shipping costs quoted reflects this).Please see all details within the listing where you can read about postage and packaging.
