ART AND COLLECTIBLES *Vintage Iridescent Damascene, Favrile, Art glass, Luster, Lamp shade*
DESCRIPTION:An exceptional Art Glass lamp shade in lustrous shades of green, gold, blue and purple. The pattern is Damascene Favrile glass, and was widely popular. Examples can be seen from Tiffany, Quezal, Steuben, Loetz and Durand glass. Other studios also produced pieces; Lundberg is producing this pattern today. We are confident this ...is an authentic vintage piece Ca. 1896-1930. Its design is reflective of the Art Nouveau/Art Deco transition period. The configuration of the fitter rim and fitter lip, as well as the opalescent interior finish (Fitter rim to bottom rim) is consistent with vintage age.
The bottom rim of the shade is rippled, with a thin silver edging. The silver has feathered into the interior of the shade (during manufacturing). We believe this particular shade was most likely made to fit into the circular metal frame of a table Lamp. Tiffany did make sets that included a floor lamp with hanging shade, and a matching table lamp with fixed shade. The shade has been stored for over 47 years.
It measures 2 1/4" at fitter rim, has a base diameter of 6 3/4" and is 3 1/4" high. The shade weighs 10.9 ounces.
The shade is unsigned, which is not unusual. Durand rarely signed shades, while Tiffany and Quezal signed less than half their pieces. The introduction of fake signatures in the 1970's adds to the confusion, as these forgeries were placed on vintage pieces.
The beautiful shade offered here is not as clunky/heavy as later reproductions.
CONDITION:
Items are in as found condition. Gentle cleaning may be done to allow for inspection and photographing.
The shade is in excellent vintage condition.
There are no flea bites, chips or cracks. As noted, there is a feathering along the bottom rim, visible on the opalescent interior of the shade. This can be felt with fingers on the exterior of the shade. All flaws we are noting occurred during the manufacturing process. The bottom rim flaws would be covered by the metal lamp ring when the shade is in use.
The opalescent interior has a few black "pepper flake" dots in the glass.
There is an inclusion in one spot, and the opalescent finish is slightly crinkled to the touch (See red note on photograph).
None of this detracts from the visual quality of the shade.
