RARE ANTIQUE ROYAL VIENNA HAND PAINTED PORCELAIN SCENE PLATE "RINALDO AND ARMIDA"
AUSTRIA LATE 19TH CENTURYUp for bid is this magnificent piece of fine porcelain manufactured in Austria by the renowned firm of Royal Vienna. A superb ROYAL VIENNA plate completely hand decorated and gilt featuring a scene from the myth of "Rinaldo and Armida". The story of Rinaldo and Armida derives from the epic poem "Gerusalemme Liberata" ( Jerusalem Delivered or The Liberation of Jerusalem ), writt...en by the Italian poet Torquato TASSO ( 1544 - 1595 ) in 1582 and has interested artists, writers and composers since the 16th century. The story is set during the First Crusade by the Romans into Jerusalem. The story of Rinaldo, the soldier, and Armida, the sorceress, is about hate turned into love. The unusual octagonal shaped plate is masterfully hand decorated in colour enamels portraying Rinaldo and Armida with Cupid to the side within a wooden landscape ( the Armida's garden ) on the round central medallion and framed with a richly gilt and jewelled trim with foliate scrolls throughout the edge. An stunning 'object de vitrine' bearing the bindenschield / beehive mark in underglaze blue to the underside and titled in red script RINALDO UND ARMIDA. A top of the line piece measuring approx. 10.25 in. ( 26 cm. ) in diameter to the widest points. In very good antique condition showing only some relatively minor wear consistent with the age. The gold, the painting, the jewels, the general condition is amazing. This plate is a true delight, it is gorgeous. A fantastic piece of the finest porcelain, skilfully hand painted and gilt and in great antique condition.
