Thisprogram is from her premier as Juliet in New York at the "Union Square Theater""Margaret Mather - She was born in povertyin Tibury, Ontario as Margaret Finlayson, daughter of John Finlayson, a farmer and mechanic, and Ann Mather. She was one of the most famousShakespearean actresses in the 1880s, altho...ugh her reputation arose as muchfrom clever publicity as from her skill.Shepremiered as Juliet in New York at the "Union Square Theater" in 1885. Heavyadvance publicity guaranteed a large turnout, but response to her performancewas mixed. While she was striking in her physicality and energy, many criticsfound her too indecorous and overbearing, particularly in the later acts. Inthe following years, she toured the country and returned to New York, toperpetually mixed reviews. She was a manifest failure as Joan Arc ina translation of Jules Barbier’s playon that subject in 1890. She retired early in the decade, after marryingGustave Pabst, scion of the Pabst Brewing Company, but they divorced after shethreatened him with a whip. She toured the US and Canada in 1883-1884 in therole of Juliet in As You Like It .She suffered from a chronic illness and died April 7, 1898 in Charleston, W.Virginia She was in performance of Shakespeare's Cymbeline and fell unconscious during the performance, dyingthat evening. Margaretwas buried in a white gown from her role as Juliet on Easter Sunday. Measures: 7" W x 9-1/2" H. Condition: Corners and edges are slightly worn.
