Up for sale is a rare, Owsley "Bear" Stanley, Grateful Dead - Steal Your Face belt buckle cast from bronze. It has been modified with diamonds that are bezel set(not glued) into the eyes of the Steal Your Face/Skull. Since they are bezel set and not glued, the diamonds can be removed by the buyer if that is your preference. I would suggest a professional jewler do it for you to avoid scratching or harming the buckle. The inside of the diamonds are extremely clear with little flaws. The...re are some very minor exterior scuffs on the diamonds from normal wear and tear , but they are barely visible unless you are loooking at them with a magnified lense. They are cut, and set, almost perfectly to fit the eyes.A friend of mine whose family owns a jewelry store in New York cut and set the diamonds for me as a favor. This buckle is rare and a one of a kind. The buckle is in very good condition as you can see from the photos I provided. The patina is still rich and the buckle has little tarnish. These buckles are hard to come by, and unfortunately, there are a lot of fakes in circulation that often find their way on to Ebay so be careful.On the back you will see that it has been signed by Owsley Stanley. It also has Owsley's and Bob Thomas's initials(OS & BT) as well. It is numbered #6, which means it came from the 6th cylinder at the foundry where it was made. There is no difference between a #1, #2, #3, etc, etc...or a #6 except for the different cylinder it was molded, cast and stored in. So don't let anyone fool you into believing specific numbers are more rare or valuable than others. One number is not more, or less, significant than the other. Also on the back you will see that it has been copy written('83).For those of you who aren't completely familiar with Owsley "Bear" Stanley, he was very important to the counterculture that began in the 60's and still exists to this day. Bear was the Grateful Dead's sound technician and their manager at one point. He was also the creator of the Grateful Deads most iconic symbol, the Steal Your Face. Owsley was also very fond of chemistry. He passed away in 2011 in Australia where he had been living for several years. He is sorely missed. RIP Bear!!!I have owned this buckle for several years. It was bought directly from Bear around '01ish. It saddens me to have to part with it, but sometimes life shows up and extra cash is needed. I'm currently in the midst of a big move from Oregon back to the East coast so I can be closer to my family.
