Original Description:
FEATURED:  A monumental art glass masterpiece by LAUREL FYFE, Founder of Fox Fire Glass, stunning from all directions and totally captivating everyone who sees this amazing creation.   A simple bowl shape, turned very exotic and fascinating by the use of a rich purple center in thick clear glass, with a wide decorated rim of brutalist curves and raw edges, reflecting light in prismatic, dichroic colors and abstract shapes impressed into the underside of the rim, which al...so reflect light into patterns on the surface and back into the bowl itself.  The glass, so thick that it appears watery blue-green, was formed in a glass furnace by heating a 3/4 inch sheet of glass until it "slumped" into the bowl shape, then hand-decorated by the artist while the glass was still hot with abstract designs impressed into the glass underneath the rim.  Then a special mineral paint, in Laurel's favorite purple for this bowl, was applied and baked into the glass, and when cool, the brutalist edges were created by chipping the rim with hammers to get this spectacular wild rim, uneven and powerful, and which captures light in iridescent colors at different angles.  A spectacular, huge centerpiece that will command attention and be the star of any art glass collection, in any setting.   This signed piece by one of the most respected Modern American Glass artists is very scarce, as few were made by her and we feel, along with her staff that we spoke with, that this is perhaps the best of that great series of bowls.

LAUREL CLARK FYFE, with no formal art training, began her amazing career in stained glass, went on to work in etched glass, and then began working with large scale glass, creating glass furniture, walls, windows, bowls such as this, and continued her experimentations with glass by working with Detroit auto manufacturers to create glass for their custom prototype concept cars for shows.  Between 1982-1995 her company, Fox Fire Glass, did glass for 140 concept cars for the big auto shows, as well as architectural and art glass commissions and work.  The famous light tunnel in the Detroit Airport is her creation, and her company, under her guidance and designs, did churches, food platters and serviceware, private and public art installations, as well as residential and commercial building installations.  She previously owned Lumen Essence, Inc. (L.E.I.), an art glass studio,   and went on to start FOX FIRE GLASS, in Fenton, MI, which continues to be very successful in business today.  She held patents on both designs and technical processes used in creating much of the company's work.  She tragically died in an automobile wreck in 2011.  Her famous glass tables, desks, benches and panels are perhaps what she is best known for today, and her name is highly respected for her innovative glasswork, designs, and technical skills and equipment development in the glass field.  This huge, beautiful creation is a perfect example of her passion for glass, her artistic talents and her ability to think very far outside all the glass boxes with her imagination and insight.

MEASURES:   20 INCHES across, 5.5 INCHES deep, signed on a curve on the top edge of the rim, L. Fyfe.  This monumental centerpiece weighs 21 pounds, is made of clear glass, appearing to be tinted but has the colors due to its thickness and superb quality of glass.  This piece has been designed and created by the artist, who did a series of these bowls, each one very different, unique and challenging to make. We feel this purple color is perhaps her best one of the line, and her staff agrees as this was her favorite color and rarely used in this series.  NOTE:  The glass is clear but does have that glorious pale blue-green tint from its thickness and quality of glass.  Very modern, striking and gorgeous, this piece is commanding wherever it is placed, and a very fabulous example of American Art Glass at its best, by one of the innovators of the modern Art Glass movement.  A classic design that will always capture amazing light and colors in any setting, and draw people to its side.   Want a museum piece that all your art collector friends will be sad they didn't get to first?  This would be just that, and so much more.

We pack your valuables with care for safety and security.

NOTE:  Due to its size and weight, this will be double-boxed and shipped in a very large box for its safety.
