This is a vintage original 27 x 41 in. US one-sheet poster from the classic silent film comedy/drama, CITY LIGHTS, released in 1931 by United Artists and directed by Charles Chaplin. With the aid of a wealthy erratic tippler (Harry Myers), a dewy-eyed tramp (Charlie Chaplin) who has fallen in love with a sightless flower girl (Virginia Cherrill) accumulates money to beable to help her medically.
Issued for the film's 1950 US theatrical re-release by United Artists, the imag...e features beautiful artwork depicting a full-length image of a Tramp (Charlie Chaplin) trying to look nonchalant as he stands with his cane bending at the center. The film's title is rendered to resemble a signs illuminated with lights and the entire image is framed with a border of light blue circles. While this poster was professionally linen-backed, it has restoration that was not very well done and and can clearly be seen. Fortunately, this can easily be redone and the poster would look amazing. It is in good condition only with random areas of restoration as seen in the accompanying photographs.City Lights was Chaplin's first film made during the sound era. Hefaced extreme pressure to make the film as a talkie, but such was hispopularity and power in Hollywood that he was able to complete and release thefilm as a silent (albeit with recorded music) at a time when the rest of theAmerican motion picture industry had converted to sound. City Lights was Chaplin'spersonal favorite of all his films. Orson Welles saidthat this was his favorite movie of all time. Russian director AndreiTarkovsky cited this as his favorite film. Woody Allen alsocalls it "Chaplin's best picture".The close-up of Chaplin at the film's climax remains one of the most famous single images in silent film history and represents a beautiful and very emotional scene.
