The RAREST OF THE RARE
An exquisite and extremely rare antique footed large -Center Bowl in "American Satsuma", hand-painted original signed by the important ceramic artist HELEN FRAZEE. The bowl is about 8-3/4 ins. diameter x about 4-1/8 ins. high. Hand inscribed signature: "Mrs. A A Frazee" "1105 Auditorium" (her studio), also much worn Lenox green mark of the ceramic blank bowl.
This extraordinar...y work is of museum quality, with vivid enamel unusual decoration of various fruit and nuts with their leaves, not the usual flowers, all meticulously hand-painted in minute detail -- perfect in every way. Far better than my photos attempt to show; base color of the bowl is ivory (off-white), as Japanese Satsuma. The colors look fresh and new. rather than their 100 years age! The work is discreetly gilded in a reserved manner, all in impeccably good taste.
Mrs. Frazee was one of the most accomplished ceramic artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She was active in the Chicago Ceramic Arts Association (1892-1918) and the famous Atlan Ceramic Arts Club (1893-1924). She is credited with introducing the conventionalized subjects in enamel on off-white china, known as "American Satsuma".
The extraordinary bowl offered here was very likely an exhibition piece. It is of the finest museum quality. Alan Reed, authority on early Pickard and other Chicago decorators' works, says of Helen Frazee, "Unfortunately surviving pieces of her works are quite rare."
CONDITION -- EXCELLENT - Clean and fine. NO chips, cracks, crazing, hairlines, or stains. Examined under magnification and ultra-violet ("black light"). There is one small area of wear to the gilt on the top rim. Otherwise I cannot find any further wear on this rare piece.
