The device of having all the figures turned away from us, their faces hidden, has the effect o...f emphasizing the extent to which they are studying. In reality, the entire nation was watching the progress of the stock market at this time, hoping for a miraculous recovery. Mr. Rockwell was so upset about the state of the economy, he painted the red-shirted grocery boy with three legs!" *note: On May 15th, 1943, at the Rockwell family home in Arlington, Vermont, a passing motorist noticed fire coming from Norman's painting studio at about 1 a.m. in the morning. They began blasting the car horn to alert the family, but it was no use. The entire contents were lost: camera equipment, art supplies, irreplaceable reference material, sketches, and many of his paintings, were gone. Many of the lost paintings could only be reproduced from the actual Saturday Evening Post magazine, using the best-preserved copies that could be found.
