What makes this interesting is there is a substitute soprano and a great one at that, Gabriela Benackova! The concert took place in Prague in front of the President of the Czech Republic, May 4, 1974! Soloists were mezzo Marie Mrazova, tenor Ivo Zidek and baritone ...Vaclav Zitek. Benackova subbed for an ailing soprano, Agia Formankova.A very special program!Rozhdestvensky (1931-2018) was a piano pupil of Lev Oborin at theMoscow Conservatory. He studied conducting with his Father, NikolaiAnosov. He graduated in 1954. From 1951-1951 he was an assistantconductor at the Bolshoi. In 1964 he was appointed Principal Conductor atthe Bolshoi and served until 1970 in that role. From 1961 to 1974 he wasthe Chief Conductor of the Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra inMoscow. From 1975-1977 he was Chief Conductor of the Stockholm Philharmonicand from 1978-1981 he was in the same role at the BBC in London. From1981-1983 he was the Chief Conductor of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. In1982 he founded and was the first Chief Conductor of the State SymphonyOrchestra of the Soviet Ministry of Culture in Moscow and served in thatposition until 1991. He then went back to Stockholm the next year andserved as Music Director once again of the Stockholm Philharmonic until1995. In 2000 he was appointed Artistic Director of the Bolshoi Theatre, he served for a year. That was his last chief position. From2011-2018 he was Principal Guest Conductor of the Iceland Symphony and the St.Petersburg Philharmonic. That said he was a welcome guest conductor atmajor orchestras throughout the world.
