Robert Graham was a contemporary art sculpturer who was bo...rn in Mexico City, and then moved to Santa Monica, California at a very young age.
After years of formal art study in California, Mr. Graham became well known for his monumental bronze sculptures.
Many of his pieces feature the human figure and are located in public places across America.
Awards included being elected a full academician to the National Academy of Design in 1994.
Graham used a range of materials and scales in his work.
His first major monumental commission was the ceremonial gateway to the L.A. Memorial Coliseum for the 1984 Olympics.
In 1986, his monument to Joe Louis, a 24 foot bronze fist and forearm, was erected in Detroit's Hart Plaza.
What Graham considers his proudest achievement is the Franklin Roosevelt Memorial in Washington, D.C.
This memorial includes a life-size figure of the president in his wheelchair in front of a series of bas-relief panels.
This very special, small scale (compared with some of his other works!) sculpture that he entitled 'Devereux' (the model's name, perhaps?).
The sculpture shows a woman's hand resting on a soft lump of clay.
Her long, slender fingers with well manicured nails gently pushes down into the material.
The title 'Devereux', roughly scratched into the front surface, is very clear to see.
The signiture "RG" and date "1982" are engraved on the underside of the wrist.
There is also the stamped mark, "DEVEREUX PEWTER", on the underside that is a little difficult to see.
The sculpture has a beautiful patina that only comes with 45 years of ageing.
The condition of this casting is excellent.
There is a small, minor chip on the bottom edge that can only be seen when the sculpture is turned upside down.
This minor blemish is highlighted with a red arrow.
Please see photos for details.
There are also a few light scratches on the base and surface; these are very minor and do not detract from the beauty of this piece.
This lovely sculpture would look great on a desk as a paperweight, or sitting on a side table as a sculpture.
The beauty and workmanship in this piece would make it delightful to look at no matter where it was located!
