ITEM: This is a vintage and original Paramount Pictures photograph of contract player Eleanore Whitney. This elegant, glamorous Art Deco Hollywood Regency portrait of Whitney modeling a lush fur cape was used to promote the 1937 comedy film, Turn Off the Moon.
The press snipe reads: COTTON LACE AND WHITE FOX - sound like an incredible combination but not in Hollywood. Eleanore Whitney, Paramount player in "Turn Off The Moon, " includes this blue lace evening gown in her personal wardrobe. The dropped décolletage stresses a romantic touch and the matching taffeta slip give a smart whisper when in action. Over the gown Eleanore is apt to wear a luxurious white fox evening cape, her present from her family on her first anniversary of her film contract.
Whitney was a lively presence in college musicals of the 1930s and was almost always paired with Johnny Downs. Whitney was said to have been taught tap dancing by Bill Robinson and became known as "the world's fastest tap dancer." Even with excellent training, skill, and plenty of stage and screen appearances under her belt, Whitney was no threat to other Hollywood tap dancing greats such as Eleanor Powell as she left films in 1938 to marry.
