Opalescent Glass contains a mixture of heat-sensitive chemicals. After a piece of glassware was removed from the mold and shaped, it was returned to the "glory hole" of the furnace for reheating, and those areas nearest the heat turned opaque white (opalescent). It was the skill of the glass maker that determined where and to what degree the glass was turned opalescent.
Fenton Art Glass Company opened for business in 1905 and, in 1907, introduced America to the inexpensive iridized glassware now known as Carnival Glass. Nearly 150 patterns in antique Carnival Glass are credited to Fenton Art Glass. Throughout the next 106 years, the Company produced literally thousands of designs in a rainbow of colors, on nearly every type of glass, with and without hand-painted original artwork. In the 1970s, Fenton joined Imperial Glass in the revival of Carnival Glass by reissuing many original patterns as well as patterns from other makers the moulds for which had been purchased at auction. In 1988, Fenton entered into an exclusive distribution arrangement with the shopping channel QVC, short for Quality, Value, Convenience. Eventually over 1350 pieces were specifically designed and offered for distribution via QVC. In 2011, after 106 years of production, Fenton Art Glass closed its doors as a maker of collectible glassware.
Contemporary Condition refers to the lack of production issues which plagued antique glassware. Modern glassware is relatively free of those production issues due to modernized machinery, advances in glass making chemistry, and quality control. Even so, because modern Art Glass is generally still hand shaped, hand-painted and/or hand-iridized, each piece is technically a one-of-a-kind, and you may still find a minor production issue from time to time.
