Up for sale is a rare antique German Mettlach Beer Stein - Hand painted Porcelain With Pewter Lid - This particular piece is from the 1893-1913 era. Shades of dark blue with a portrait of man in Renaissance dress holding a goblet. Porcelain - Approximately 8-5/8" tall and 3-3/4" diameter at the base. This weighs approximately 1-3/4 pounds. It holds 1/2 Liter as marked. Excellent condition for its age with no breaks, chips or cracks. Mettlach's "Golden Age" of s...tein production was between 1885 - 1910. Mettlach is easily the best known name among manufactures of old beer steins, and to collectors the name is synonymous with quality and value. The company of Villeroy and Boch (V&B), is named from the village where it is located. The majority of steins produced by Villeroy and Boch are sought by today's collectors and produced in this factory located on the Saar River in Western Germany. Founded in 1809 by Johann Franz Boch-Buschmann. The company Villeroy and Boch resulted from a merger with Nicolas Villeroy in 1836. The mark V&B over M was used from 1893-1914.
