Marx Brothers 'Animal Crackers' 1974 Universal Re-release Press Kit!. Shipped with USPS Priority Mail. Ok. We Marx Brothers fans are a rabid bunch, and this is a super-cool artifact of this beloved act. A bit of history: we have fan Steve Stolier to thank fo this movie existing in the condition it does today. After seeing a horribly preserved print in the early 70's- the film had been out of circulation since the 50's- he contacted Groucho himself and they pursued a re-release of the f...ilm from Universal who had acquired the rights. Universal apparently balked and so Groucho organized an event at UCLA under the name 'CRAC'- The Committee For The Re-release of Animal Crackers. The event drew a lot of people and interest and Universal quickly scrambled to put together what they called a 'Re-Premiere' at the Westwood United Artists Theater on May 23 of 1974 with Grouch in attendance. It was successful and the film garnered a major re-release. Long story, but this press kit is for that 'Re-premiere!' It shows its age, fur sure, the production notes show substantial edge wear and some staining/discoloration, but the program retains its original color and opens to reveal several photos from the film and production info. Given the situation of the re-release the notes are a hoot as they detail Universal's trouble with copyright and acquiring the film and it almost strikes me as an attempt to save face given the publicity the film had by then garnered.
