What a super piece; with beautiful design, bold deep color, a wonderfully sharp opalescent pattern and in excellent condition ! This fancy eye-catching Fenton Vase was part of their first big production runs of Cranberry Opalescent Glass in the early 1950’s. The pattern is Fenton’s interpretation of the “Rib Opalescent” pattern in use at American Glass houses in the 1880’s: Hobbs Brockunier, Northwood, Beaumont; Fenton added new shapes and the satin finish as ...their contribution to the legacy. This exact Cranberry Vase is documented in the book “Fenton Glass, The Second Twenty-Five Years” by William Heacock on page 54, bottom row of pictures. The base glass is Fenton’s world-famous Cranberry color; on this particular piece, the Cranberry color is very deep and very clear, providing a wonderful backdrop for the opalescent stripe or “rib” design. The opalescence is a strong snowy-white, is well defined and has very sharp edges, which causes it to really “pop out” against the dark cranberry glass. Note that on this particular vase the opalescent stripes are very evenly spaced and almost perfectly vertical from bottom to top; on some examples I’ve seen the stripes are uneven and cockeyed. This is a good size, eye-catching piece: it is a full 7.5 inches tall, is 3.5 inches across the “fattest” part of the body, and is 4.5 inches wide at the fancy crimped opening. Condition of this scarce, old vase is absolutely mint some 68 years after it left the factory: there are NO chips, cracks, flakes, stains or repairs !
