Antique Nesting, Cup, Apothecary, Guilding, Bank weights, 1lb 15.8oz c. 1750-1850. This is a set of antique brass nesting weights, also referred to as Guilding Weights or Apothecary Weights. These weight sets were used to verify the weight of coinage from realm to realm by traveling merchants who used them. The house or lidded container is equal in weight to the remaining cups. The next cup is then equal in weight to the remaining cups and so on. The merchant could determine the weight... of coins on a balance scale depending on which combination of cups used.These weights went out of use when paper currency became accepted. They were also used by pharmacies, banks and alchemists. We believe this set to be c.1750-1850. This is a little piece of history. Feel free to contact me with anyquestions.
