Original Description:
Civil War part-printed discharge for promotion, dated at Oxford, Miss., Dec. 10, 1862,  of Sgt. John S. Hardin, Co. B, 59th Regiment Indiana Infantry, discharged in order to accept promotion to 2nd Lieutenant. He is described as 26 years of age, 5', 10-1/2", fair complexion, with hazel eyes and dark hair, and that he was a mechanic when he was enrolled. Eagle, shield and flags vignette at top. Signed at bottom by Col. J. I. Alexander, Commanding the Regt. - a scarce autograph of J...esse Ianthus Alexander,  (1824-1871), a Gosport, Indiana lawyer who had served in the Mexican War, and a few terms in the Indiana State Senate in the 1850's, he Commanded the 59th Indiana from its formation until his resignation in 1864. He fought with distinction in the Vicksburg campaign, having commanded the 1st Brigade, 7th Division, 17th Army Corps for a month, and there is a marker with his portrait at the Vicksburg National Military Park. He died at age 46, and his signature is scarce.The discharge passed up the chain of command and on the back is "Headquarters 17th Army Corps, Department of the Tennessee, Lake Providence, La., March 6th, 1863...To be Discharged By order of Maj. Genl. McPherson", signed by William T. Clark, as Asst. Adjutant General of the 17th Army Corps. A scarce autograph of WILLIAM T. CLARK,  (1831-1905), who went on to be promoted to Brigadier General. From Wikipedia: At the beginning of the Civil War, he became a Lieutenant and adjutant of the 13th Iowa Inf. Regt. He fought at the battle of Shiloh and Corinth. He served as assistant adjutant general in the XVII Army Corps during the siege of Vicksburg, and  assistant adjutant general to the Army of the Tennessee during the Atlanta Campaign. He was made a Bvt. Brigadier General for service in the Atlanta Campaign and was assigned to an infantry brigade in the XV Corps during the Carolinas Campaign, but was only lightly engaged in fighting. He rose to the full rank of Brigadier General of volunteers (1865), and was made a brevet Major General at the close of the same year for gallant and meritorious services during the war. After the war, he made his home in Galveston, Texas,  where he organized the first negro school and befriended negroes at the risk of his life. He founded the First National Bank and was its first cashier, and also served as Postmaster. In U.S. Congress from Texas, 1870-1872.Old repair to one fold split.
