I got these pocket door handles from an apartment I was working on in the Sherry-Netherland in NYC in the late 1980's. The apartment was the penthouse duplex (the one with the gargoyles just below the windows) and had belonged to Hollywood movie producer, Jack Warner. I know that the famous decorator Billy Haines had decorated the apartment for Warner but I have no idea if the handles were designed by Haines or by someone else. I am guessing that these were made in the 1940's or e...arly 50's.
They were installed in a pair of very large sliding/pocket doors between the Living Room and Library. The new owner had hired the designer I was working for and the interior was going to demolished. I thought these were very cool and I had intended to use them myself but never did.
The handles appear to be crafted of solid brass and have a patina, which is scratched and worn is a few areas (see photos). The patina could be touched up or could be removed entirely if natural brass is desired.
They are very solid, very heavy. Each pair weighs 4 Lbs 5 Oz.
There is some kind of signature on the back of one of the handles (see photos).
The handles each measure 12" long x 5" wide, at the top. When placed back-to-back, each pair measures 1 3/4" thick. The minimum thickness of any door these are installed in would need to be 1 3/16".
