MODERN CARNIVAL GLASS
ACANTHUS LEAF
Super nice Sunset Ruby Carnival Glass 6" x 6" Double Crimped Compote, in excellent... undamaged contemporary condition. This lovely compote really has an Amberina look to it, especially on the foot. Introduced in 1968 as Line #3800/42C, this design was originally produced by Cambridge Glass Company and has no relationship to Imperial's Carnival Era pattern 'Acanthus'.
~~~~~~~~~~~~ Imperial Glass Company of Bellaire, Ohio - located right across the Ohio River from Northwood's Wheeling, WV plant - began production of Carnival Glass around 1909. Carnival Glass produced by Imperial during the Carnival Era (1907-1930s) bore no trademark except for the occasional "Iron Cross" logo. During the 1960s and 70s, Imperial Glass along with Fenton Art Glass, revitalized interest in Carnival Glass by reissuing some of their original patterns. This Modern or Contemporary Carnival Glass will bear this logo:
MODERN IMPERIAL CARNIVAL GLASS WILL HAVE AN EMBOSSED (IG, LIG or ALIG) LOGO
Modern Carnival Glass was introduced to America in the late 1960s, when the Imperial Glass Company, along with the Fenton Art Glass Company, revived the genre by re-issuing and reproducing many patterns of their own as well as patterns from other makers whose molds they had purchased. The same process of spraying hot glass with proprietary solutions of metallic salts to produce a microscopically-thin layer of metal which bonded to the glass on a molecular level was used to iridize the new glassware. Different salt solutions and multiple sprayings influenced the color and intensity of the iridescence, however modern glass accepted the metallic salt solutions in a different manner due its hardness, generally producing a "harder" (some say harsher) iridescence.
Contemporary Condition refers to the lack of production issues which plagued antique glassware. Modern glassware is relatively free of those production issues due to modernized machinery, advances in glass making chemistry, and quality control. Even so, because modern Art Glass is generally still hand shaped, hand-painted and/or hand-iridized, each piece is technically a one-of-a-kind, and you may still find a minor production issue from time to time.
