Original Description:
An interesting May 1861 Confederate order appointing Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Jordan as inspector of the quartermaster and subsistence departments at Camp Henry near Culpeper, Virginia. Jordan resigned his commission in the U.S. Army on May 22 and this order was issued on the same day. Jordan would fight at First Manassas and would serve as chief-of-staff to Generals P. G. T. Beauregard and Braxton Bragg. The order is signed by a staff officer on behalf of another future Confederate Ge...neral, Samuel Jones. The order reads:Hd Qrs Camp HenryCulpeper C.H. May 22d 1861Special OrderNo. 9.I. Lt. Col. Thomas Jordan, Provisional Army of Va, is assigned to duty at these Head Quarters as Inspector of the Quarter Master and Subsistence Department for the thorough and speedy organization of these departments according to regulations.II. All Officers on duty in these departments will communicate with and receive instructions from these Head Quarters through him.By Order of Col. Cooke(Signed) Samuel JonesLt. Col. Asst. Adj. Genl. The order measures about 7 3/4” x 6 1/2”. It was long ago mounted to another piece of paper, which also had a period newspaper article attached. The adhesive used in that process has resulted in a very slight wave in the order. There is some deterioration to the upper-right corner. There are also several vertical and horizontal creases where the order was originally folded. Please see my other items for more interesting and original Civil War pieces.
