This grouping of steins include four Mettlach - Villeroy and Boch lidded steins made in Mettlach, Germany. The steins feature illustrations from the “Russian Fairy Tales” series by Viking Penguin Inc., illustrated by the French-Russian master, Boris Zvorykin. Each stein features three original works of art by Zvorykin on illustrated panels representing various Russian Fairy Tales. The illustrations by transfer are fantastic in details and vibrant in color. The bottom... of each stein identifies the three illustrations on that stein. Atop each stein is a pewter lid with illustrated porcelain s-sided inlay that defines the subject of each stein. The thumb rest represents the Mettlach Abbey and attaches to a cobalt blue handle rich with detail. During the 1930s, Zvorykin translated into French the Russian tales Snow Maiden, Vasilisa the Beautiful, Maria Morevna, the Firebird, and created illustrations that are showcased on these four steins.Stein One. “The Snow Maiden 1526” – Three Panel Depicted Scenes: (1) Snegurochka; (2) Snegurochka at the Court of Tsar Berendei; (3) Snegurochka and Lel, the Shepherd Boy.Stein Two. “1527” - Three Panel Depicted Scenes: (1) The Red Knight; (2) Vassilissa is Presented to the Tsar; (3) Vassilissa and her Stepsisters.Stein Three. “1528” - Three Panel Depicted Scenes: (1) In Search of the Firebird; (2) Ivan and Tsarevna on the Grey Wolf; (3) The Wedding of Tsarevna Elena the Fair.Stein Four. “1529” – Three Panel Depicted Scenes: (1) Kashchey carries off Maria Morevna; (2) Tsarevich Ivan and the beautiful Castle; (3) Maria Morevna and Tsarevich Ivan.
