Founded in 1888 by Dr. Theodore Corson Wheaton, itbecame a mainstay of the economy of southern New Jersey, which gaineda reputation as the center of commercial glass manufacturing in theUnited States. The company was run by the Wheaton family for nearlyits entire existence, and its height it had 41 factories throughoutthe United States and subsidiaries in 20 other countries. Many of itsvintage products continue to be collectors items. Formerly asubsidiary of Alcan Packaging as Wheaton Science Products, it wastaken private in November 2006, and is once again known as WheatonIndustries. The company wasfounded by Theodore C. Wheaton, a pharmacist and businessman, who in1883 settled in Millville, in Cumberland County, New Jersey, southeast of Philadelphia. Southern New Jersey had by that timeemerged as the center of U.S. glass manufacturing because of theprevalence of natural resources such as wood, sand, and silica.Wheaton became particularly interested in the manufacture ofpharmaceutical glassware, and in 1888 he established a small factoryon the outskirts of Millville to manufacture his own bottles. Thecompany became known as the T.C. Wheaton Co. Anticipatingfuture growth of the company, Wheaton purchased 25 square blocks inMillville in an area bounded by Third Street, Wheaton Avenue andnorth to railroad siding which allowed the company to expand over thefollowing decades. Wheaton's son, Frank H. Wheaton, Sr., entered thecompany in 1889. Two years later, the company suffered a financialsetback when T.C. Wheaton entered into a bad business venture thatleft the company ten years to pay off. In the form of γ-anhydrite (theanhydrous form), it is used as a desiccant. One particular hydrate isbetter known as plaster of Paris, and another occurs naturally as themineral gypsum. It has many uses in industry. All forms are whitesolids that are poorly soluble in water. Calcium sulfate causespermanent hardness in water. Upto the 1970s, commercial quantities of sulfuric acid were produced inWhitehaven (Cumbria, UK) from anhydrous calcium sulfate. Upon beingmixed with shale or marl, and roasted, the sulfate liberates sulfurtrioxide gas, a precursor in sulfuric acid production, the reactionalso produces calcium silicate, a mineral phase essential in cementclinker production. Themain sources of calcium sulfate are naturally occurring gypsum andanhydrite, which occur at many locations worldwide as evaporites. These may be extracted by open-cast quarrying or by deep mining.CAUTION: Thisbottle was acquired from an actual laboratory supply company and maycontain some chemical residue.
