Following his apprenticeship Cavell opened his first shop and workshops in Tavern Street at around the same time as marrying Caroline Easton but within a short while he took over the business of John Page following the latter's death in December 1773. After a period of time Cavell advertised that he was now selling goods of his own and selling off that 'inferior' stock which he had inherited with the Page business. Although not a church goer he repaired the St. Mary le Tower church clock in 1782 and 1788. Nathaniel Cavell died in January 1789 with his widow continuing the business for a few months before selling the remaining stock at auction on Monday November 16th 1789.
