Hello typewriter fans. Up for bid is this Remington model 2 typewriter. According to the Remington typewriter serial number data base, this example was produced in 1888, making it 131 years old. The mechanism is in good shape. No bent or deformed type levers. Slight areas of nickel plating peeling ( see photos). Three areas of concern. One, it's missing two keys. The key levers that they are attached to are actually wood, so I am enclosing two patterns for replacement levers that must ...be glued in and painted flat black. You must find the actual keys themselves though. Two, there is a wooden roller that is pressed against the platen by rubber bands ( yes rubber bands!) to provide tension for the paper to be fed securely. A actual replacement may be difficult to find, but I was going to make one out of a wooden dowel, stain it, and put two small pulleys on either side( same diameter as the drive pulleys) but I just don't have the time. ( if new owner wishes, I will enclose instructions and dimensions for this usable and almost indistinguishable from the original part replacement) Lastly, the paper table is missing. Even with these issues the mechanism cosmetically looks very nice for its age. All keys work, and the mechanism is pretty clean, even the bell works. You will notice in the photos that there is a cord replacement for the original carriage return mechanism. The original leather strap had broken with age. I just put the temporary cord on so as the new owner would know that the spring wound motor and return mechanism itself was operational, and how a replacement ( leather) strap should be installed. The carriage does advance when the space bar or keys are depressed. I include also the original leather strap so the new owner can fabricate one that is indistinguishable from the original. This was the second typewriter to be produced by Remington, and they very first to have the "shift" key to write in lower case. It is an "understrike" or "blind" typewriter as the platen assembly must be raised to see what has been written. Please inspect photographs very carefully as they are the major indication of the typewriters condition. Please rest assured every effort will be used to very securely pack and protect this exceptional example of typewriter history. Oh..serial number is 32, 369. I've made every effort to describe this typewriter to the best of my knowledge, but this item is an "as is" sale, with no returns. Payment is expected either immediately after auction ends, or within 24 hours. As I live a ways from town, shipment will be within two business days of payment. Thank you for viewing this auction. Any questions or comments please contact me. P.S. The instruction manual of this typewriter is available on line! Thanks again! P.S.S. In the third photo, on the extreme right on top of the bar, you'll see a broken off screw head. This screw needs replacement, but any hardware outlet should have a reasonable facsimile. No harm using it this way, and the screw is not stuck! I just removed it carefully, ( as it was broken off and jammed within the hole) and carefully re-inserted it partially to help hold this bar in place. Just had to include this fact for complete disclosure. Thanks yet again!
