Stanley No 4 Smooth Plane Type 16 1933-41 Tuned. No breaks cracks chips or repairs to the body or frog. Retains 95% of its original black japanning. Type 16 correct, has the kidney shaped hole with the Patent No. on the back. The iron has “338” stamped on it dating it to the third quarter of 1938. Frog adjustment tab and screw have been re-blued just as it would have left the factory in New Britain 81 years ago. The Rosewood tote and knob are free of cracks chips or repairs and hav...e been re-lacquered then hand polished to a silky smooth feel. The sole has been lightly lapped and checked at the toe mouth and heel. The mouth is good with no chips cracks or alterations. The lever cap and chip breaker have been lapped at their contact points with the iron to ensure a firm seat and reduce chatter. The near full length iron has been lapped flat on the back and then honed with a 10, 000 grit Ohishi Water Stone, Scary Sharp and makes see through shavings in black cherry, with a finish as smooth as glass. For the photo I set the iron about a 1/4 turn deeper to get a nice full width shaving and to show there are no nicks on the iron edge and that’s its honed correctly. If it had any imperfections on the edge it would show up in a thin shaving as a line or a separated shaving. This is due to microscopic nicks on the edge, or there is a split in the shaving. I ensure there are neither. You are getting a honed iron that will produce a smooth as glass shaving with no lines. All screws move freely and have been lightly oiled.
