This is an antique Japanese Taisho Era c. 1920's cast heavy bronze koro (censer for incense burning). It would have been used in a butsudan (Japanese family Buddhist shrine) and would have been half filled with ash in which incense was placed. There is a raised design of birds perching on plum blossom branches on both sides of the koro. The two side handles, with a bird motif, aided in easily moving the koro (see picture 5). The base has tripod footing for level displaying (...see pictures 10 and 11). Having been in storage, with exception to all original aged patina and minor signs of use, this koro remains in fine condition.
