'THE MISTER' Coleman Flying School LTD. Class 43-J Graduation Book
(During WW2, the US Gov't contracted several private flying schools to handle the overflowof a quickly growing US AIR POWER force slated for the ETO air wars)
belonged to AAF 2LT. Bombardier Killed-in-Action during a classified'Carpetbagger' aka Operation Peter SOE night mission aerial supply forpartisan/resistance fighters. Carpetbagger Night Missions were clas...sified.
The 801st Bomb Group was established as part of the Eighth Air Force in late March 1944 to carry out 'Carpetbagger' missions. These were night missions over France and other parts of occupied Europes to support resistance forces by dropping in agents, supplies and leaflets. The B-24 Liberators flown by the Group were painted black to help the crews evade detection by enemy anti-aircraft postions. On 13 August 1944, the Group was redesignated as the 492nd Bomb Group.
-circumstances:ETO AAF 850th BOMB SQUADRON, 801st Bomb Group(H) aka 'Air Arm of the
O.S.S.' flying out of station 179 RAF Harrington (Templesford, UK).
the KLINE combat crew B-24H serial # 42-50386 E-Easy, shot down by ME-110night fighter on 4-5 JULY 1944 Les Trois Mares Oise at 02:00 hrs....crash siteLagny-Le-Sec Oisne France 35 miles south of Paris. MACR 6991 (missing air crew report).
all members of KLINE's CREW were KIA'ed. some are interred at the US MilitaryCemetery at Epinal France...others including this 2LT was returned to CONUS.
-graduation book included:sepia toned photo of KLINE's COMBAT CREW posing in front of theirB-24 4-engine heavy. it is an official actual PUBLIC RELATIONS photo ofKLINE's KIA combat crew.
from MTN Home Army Air Field Idaho (transit training point for heavy combat crews) dated 2 MAY 44. the caption paper is glued inside the book.typical wartime newsprint type paper stock...mimeographed.
-written on the outside....in feminine handwriting (either the KIA's motheror sister or female relative)....a list of contact she wrote for further info:-WAR DEPT-492d BOMB SQDRN (H) CHAPLAIN APO-postmaster FRANCE-french director of funeral services-US Army officer Graves Registration APO france
-note in blue ink glued to fold ontop of that: list of some of KLINE'SCREW KIA relatives...she probably contacted as well
-overlaying that is THE CREW ROSTER written in the KIA 2LT's
handwriting....he mentions their marital status (married/single)...so I
suspect he is writing to his sister. the complete KIA'ed KLINE CREW....back page has the CREW CHIEFS

-hardbound with linen board covers-opening has graduation fellow airmen's signatures and their hometown.quick research: there are KIAs, POWs.....they graduated early enough to ALL participatein the AIR WAR that was being waged over the skies of Europe and pacific theaters.-many many name captioned CADETS....one signed reserached to be a KIA-one is Chinese-American from Phoenix AZ-you research the rest-pages are un-numbered-the sister/mother wrote in red ink 'HUGH' (2LT's middle name) ....where he appearsin some of the candid photos.
-boards a bit loose from the spine binding....but NOT TORN LOOSE
