This silver reliquary dates from circa 1875-1885.... It is made in France, and bears multiple French hallmarks for Paris 1880's. The two dark spots on the left arm of the silver cross are actually some of the hallmarks. The label under the relic reads Vr. Cr. J.C., a French abbreviation for Vraie Croix de Jesus Christ or True Cross of Jesus Christ in English. The locket theca has a cover which can be removed by unscrewing the 3 sterling pins. The relic's inside displays crisp and detailed red wax seal of prelate securing the 4 perfect red silk threads, ensuring the validity of the relic. There is a paper label inside which I found confusing at first...until I realized 7re was another abbreviation, for September, Sept being 7 in Latin. September 14 is the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, or Triumph of the Cross. The reliquary cross measures 2 3/4" x 1 5/8" and is constructed of heavy gauge silver. This relic, along with the others I am listing this week, are from the estate of a French archbishop. He was well-known for his huge private relic and reliquary collection. He had particular interest in Passion relics of our Lord, as well as the Holy Family and saints mentioned in the Bible. His name, photo, coat of arms and biography will be provided to the relic's new custodian. The last photo shows some of the other relics I'll be listing his week...so please check out my other items! I gladly combine shipping!I guarantee this relic to be authentic and as described. Please use caution when buying relics on line. Counterfeit Relics are increasingly more and more common. I have been collecting Relics and reliquaries for two decades. I have recently retired, and downsized. I can no longer house and display my collection properly. It is time for others to become their custodians, so they may be venerated and displayed appropriately...*FedEx or a similar shipping service with full tracking required for shipment to some destinations, including Brazil, India, Mexico and the Philippines.
