Civil War Soldier Letter Rufas M Graham, 50th Mass, On Board Niagara 12/15/62
Item History & Price
When we got to Philadelphia steam pumps were working, 10 feet of water in the hold, old boat trembled, was ...very dangerous, we think we were luck to come out with our lives, we are anchored outside the Navy Yard, have to get another steamer to keep above water, colonel going to New York to plead case to Gen Andrew, details about regiment that is sadly broken up, some have gone on board the Jersey Blue.
Co H went on another boat, do not know where our band went, all staff officers on this boat, best men did not know what danger we were in the night before last, it is a pity government can't find safe boats to carry the soldiers, in passing up Delaware Bay and River, past nice fort, it was Fort Delaware, saw Wilmington and Chester PA, good deal of ship building going on here, saw an ironclad, built monitor style, saw Fort Miffin, some nice farms along the Delaware, this country is delightful, more excellent content.
