For auction is a document handwritten and signed personally by - JOHN MONTAGU , 4TH EARL of SANDWICH ( 1718-1792)
Inventor of the sandwich and also known as a great supporter of Captain James Cook , Sandwich approved Admiralty funds for the
purchase of the Resolution , Adventure and Discovery for Cook's second and third expedition's in the Pacific Ocean.
In honour of Sandwich , Cook named Sandwich Islands ( Hawaii ) after him as well as t...he Montague Islands off the south east coast of Australia.
The document , being the conclusion of a letter with words on both sides seeking to procure a passage through " Bombay & India " and dated
April 13 1769 ( the day Cook sailed the Endeavor in Matavia Bay , Tahiti ).
