Tiemann Craniotomy Trephine Elevator & Rasp 19th C. Medical Surgical Instrument

15.9 cm long 19th century cranial elevator made by Tiemann of NYC. Dual-ended instrument (elevator and raspatory) was used after the trephine had finished cutting through the skull, to lift the resultant bone disk and smooth any rough edge. Also found use in lifting depressed pieces in skull fractures. Made of polished steel, the elevator end is 16 mm wide, the rasp end is 8.5 mm at its widest. Strongly marked Tiemann in the Old English font. 4 cm long grip area... has transverse ridges that may be hand applied. 5.5 mm thick in mid-handle. One small smooth spot of discoloration, seen in pictures 2 & 5, otherwise a wonderful finish.
