SMALL ANTIQUE FRENCH BRASS CARRIAGE CLOCK. JUST RESTORED AND SERVICED (JUNE 2019). COMES WITH A DOUBLE-ENDED KEY.
I am retired and have been restoring antique and vintage clocks for nearly 40 years. I specialise in carriage clocks. I have had professional horological training. I have just finished restoring this small clock made early last century by Douverdrey & Bloquel . I completely dismantled both the case and the movement to clean and polish them. Before rebuilding th...e case, I gave each part a coat of special wax polish to delay the tarnishing process. I hand polished the movement parts before reassembling the movement. I then oiled it with high grade clock/watch oil.
The clock is very slightly smaller than standard carriage clocks of the same period. Height with handle folded down 4 inches (10 cms.); Depth 2 1/4 inches (6 cms.); Width 2 3/4 inches (7 cms)
CLOCK CASE: Solid brass with bevelled glasses to the front, sides and top. Unusually, the rear door is solid brass. The clock sits on four small turned brass feet and has four very pretty fluted pillars - all in perfect condition.The case has restored beautifully and now has a lustrous antique patina which should last for years before it needs cleaning again. (I can advise as to how best to do this).MOVEMENT: Beautifully engineered in perfect original condition. It was made by Douverdrey & Bloquel C 1910 and bears that company's name on the inside of the rear door. Before cleaning it, I checked it carefully wheel by wheel and was pleased to find that it was in really excellent condition with no apparent wear at all! All the back plate mounting screws have been attractively chromed. The replacement Swiss lever escapement works perfectly and the clock keeps spot on time.DIAL: The white enamel-on-copper dial is original to the clock and slightly smaller than standard. I therefore needed to retain it and so spent quite a bit of time restoring it. There is a small chip to the top right corner which I filled and which is really only visible when the movement is out of the case. I also repaired some small hairline cracks to the extent that they are now almost invisible to the naked eye and certainly do not show in the close-up picture nor on display. The roman numerals and the chapter ring are black and crystal clear: each five minute mark on the chapter ring is highlighted with a small gold dot. The blued steel hands are original and in perfect condition.GLASSES: The four bevelled glasses are original and in perfect condition. They are made from high quality "greenish" optical glass. KEY: Brass double-ended carriage clock key. One end is for winding the 8-day movement and the other is for adjusting the hands. There is also a fast/slow adjustment lever which is reached through the rear door - which opens and closes with satisfying precision.THIS SMALL CARRIAGE CLOCK IS IN EXCELLENT ORIGINAL CONDITION. IT LOOKS REALLY EYE-CATCHING ON DISPLAY
