Oil-wick cap lamps were shaped like small kettles—a small font that contained... oil fueled a wick that was stuffed into the spout. The oil-wick cap lamp issued a bare flame, giving off enough light for miners to see what was in front of their face, but not much further. The oil-fueled flame was exceedingly smoky, and could easily ignite flammable gasses (mainly methane) found in coal mines. These lamps were worn on soft caps that offered little in the way of protection and were mainly worn for the convenience of having a light source in front of the miner's face.” American History”Miners' oilwick cap lamps were used in the U.S. from the 1860s into the early 1920s in some areas with the first patent for a miners' oilwick lamp being granted to Wm. Seybold on May 13, 1862 and the last patent being granted to Stanley Yellen on Apr. 20, 1915. Of the 119 oilwick cap lamp patents awarded 70 were granted in the state of Pennsylvania with the remainder being divided among 14 other states. The lamps with single wall spouts were designed to burn a liquid fuel while those with double wall spouts were designed to burn liquid fuel or a paraffin based solid fuel sold under the brandname "Sunshine".
