"Issued to honor the nursing profession, this stamp depicts "Student Nurse Lighting Candle" By... Alfred Charles Parker. The tradition of lighting a candle while taking the Nursing Oath upon graduation is related to Florence Nightingale. During the Crimean War (1854-1856) Ms. Nightingale was seen going on rounds carrying a Turkish lantern. She became known as "the Lady with the Lamp".
Today's Registered Nurse is educationally qualified and licensed to provide a wide range of medical services. She has far surpassed the guidelines set out by Florence Nightingale in the mid 19th-century.As a result, the tradition of lighting a candle has been deleted from most Nursing school programs"
