Medium: Oil on canvas.
Painting's size: 28.75" by 21.25"
Signed: Yes. Signed by Lavarenne on the lower right. Lavarenne also signed again and titled the painting "Baigneuse d' la Serviette Blanche" (Bathing in the White Towel) on the back of the canvas.
Framed: Yes. The 5" wide and 2" deep carved wood frame measures 40.5" by 33". Other than a few minor nicks/scratches, the frame is in good, overall condition... and it must have taken a LONG time to create!!!
Painting's Condition: Very good, overall condition.
Ultraviolet Light Test: No inpainting. Lavarenne's signature is original to the painting.
Additional Comments: This large and enchanting oil painting was done by listed French artist- Pierre Lavarenne. I like this painting on many levels. Besides being a finely done painting with a great sense of mood and atmosphere, it is also a painting that pays homage to Japonism.
Although the craze of Japonism struck suddenly, Europeans had been interested in East Asian arts for a long time. Japanese and Chinese porcelains were being collected by the 1700s, as were Japanese paintings. In essence, it was mainly the so-called high arts of Japan that had made their way to the West, where they were imported and displayed with care.
In 1862, the first major public show of Japanese art was hosted in London, called the International Exhibition. People flocked to the show and eagerly marveled at the exotic arts. This fascination compounded at the Exposition Universelle (World Fair) in Paris in 1867. This was the first time that Japan had its own pavilion in a European-based world fair, and it was incredibly popular. By 1872, a French art critic had developed a term for the ever-increasing obsession with Japanese popular arts: Japonisme.
Of course, the influence of Japonism went beyond the appearance of Japanese objects as subjects of art. Japonism began to reshape European art itself. Remember, there was a growing movement of artists who wanted to break free from the conventions of Western fine art. Now, their culture was being flooded not only with Japanese arts, but popular arts specifically. This was the ultimate rejection of Western academic art, and avant-garde artists ate it up. The representational yet abstract aesthetics of Japanese art began working their way into Western paintings. To avant-garde artists, this was the key to rejecting Western convention. Western painters tended to focus on extremely representational art, striving to make the viewer forget they were looking at a canvas.
In this painting, Lavarenne didn't try to copy his French predecessors who experimented with Japaonism during the beginning of the century. Instead, he expanded on the style by creating both- an enchanting and mysterious atmosphere surrounding a Japanese woman drying herself off with a white towel.

Service: USPS Priority Mail or FedEx Ground. Any item that sells for over $100 must be sent with signature required.
Shipping Address: If you pay with PayPal: I can only ship to the address listed on you eBay invoice & PayPal payment.
If you have a special address that your item needs to be shipped to, it must be reflected on both eBay & PayPal address, or I cannot ship it there. I am not protected by PayPal’s Seller Protection Policy if I ship to an address that is not reflected in eBay & PayPal’s system.
Estimated delivery: 3-10 business days after seller receives cleared payment. The estimated delivery time is based on the handling time, the shipping service selected, and when I receive the cleared payment. Country_cat777 is not responsible for shipping service transit times. If an item has been broken during shipment, please let me know within 24 hours of receiving the item. I keep detailed digital photographs of all of the items sold and use third party verification.
If there is shipping damage, the winning bidder will need to hold onto all of the packing materials, and must wait for the outcome of the shipper's (FedEx / USPS) inspection, before receiving any money.
I use the highest quality packing materials & pack beyond FedEx / USPS standards. However, if there is damage during shipping, a return will generally require the buyer to forfeit the item to the postal carrier or to return it to the seller at the sellers cost.
If you have changed your mind, I ask that you pay for the return shipping.
Miscellaneous:
If the auction is described as having a frame, the frame is included. However, since some of the frames have per-existing damage (damage will be described in auction), please consider all of the frames in the auctions as being a free extra gift.
