Original Description:
Welcome.  For your consideration is an antique watercolor painting of a Gloucester, Massachusetts harbor scene by well-listed Massachusetts artist John Alfred Cook (1870-1936).  This painting was completed on paper and signed by the artist on the lower right, John A. Cook.  It was not dated, I am estimating the painting to be from the very early 1900's time period.  This vintage impressionist painting captures several fishing boats tied up to the docks in ...a harbor in Gloucester, MA.  The main boat has a fisherman unloading the catch of the day.
This painting was recently deaccessed by the Smith College Museum of Art, connected to the well-known Smith College located in Northhampton, MA.  The prominent art museum is considered to be one of the most impressive college museums in the country.  The museum is best known for its remarkable compilation of American and European art of the 19th and 20th centuries.
This painting is in good vintage condition.  Under a black light it shows no signs of paint loss, in-painting or repair.  Unframed the painting measures 8" in height x 10" wide and together with the gold wooden frame it measures 13 1/4" x 15 1/4".  The handsome frame has a beveled edge and a depth of 1 1/4" and is in very good condition.  This small impressionist gem of a painting will make for a welcome addition to your collection!
As for the artist, John Alfred Cook was born in Gloucester, Massachusetts on March 14, 1871.  John was inspired to be an artist at the early age of 8 by observing a sketching group, led by Boston painter William Morris Hunt.  He studied at the Cowles Art School and he later studied in Boston with Joseph DeCamp, Douglas Volk and Ernest L. Major.
John returned to Gloucester where he set up his summer studio on 351 East Main St. and a Winter studio at 16 Sayward St in East Gloucester, MA.  For many years he had a gallery in the Hawthorne Inn on Easter Point Road.  Cook was known for his impressionist watercolor paintings that had an emphasis on light and shade.  His primary subjects where the colorful fishing docks and waterfront in and around Cape Ann and Gloucester.
He was a member of the Society of Independent Artists, the Boston Art Club, the Gloucester Society of Artists, and the North Shore Arts Association.  He exhibited his work with the Boston Art Club.  John Alfred Cook passed away in Gloucester in 1936.
