Iconic POP ART artist ANDY WARHOL was born in PITTSBURGH and worked in NEW YORK CITY.
He is considered to be the greatest artist of the American POP-ART movement, which he co-founded in New York in the 1960s.Warhol was originally an illustrator and commercial artist, and much in demand in the 1950s.
By the early-1960s he had started to form the concept and first paintings of the burgeoning POP ART movement.
Often taking as his basis photographic images of popular figures (MARILYN MONROE, JACKIE KENNEDY, ELIZABETH TAYLOR) he would transfer these images crudely to a color silkscreen press, often painting over the resulting inked images with acrylic paints as well. The results were bold, vivid, stunning---and immediately recognizable by everyone.
Andy Warhol was also a prolific film director (the movies: EMPIRE STATE BUILDING; CHELSEA GIRLS; HEAT; BAD and FLESH and many, many others).
He was also a talented photographer, never without a Kodak Instamatic or a Polaroid "instant" camera; and a highly original writer and instigator of the band THE VELVET UNDERGROUND as well as creating and publishing the legendary "Andy Warhol's Interview" magazine.
His life was cut tragically short by a botched gall bladder operation in hospital and he died there after a cardiac arrest at the age of 58.
THE PAINTING
A terrific ORIGINAL ILLUSTRATIVE PAINTING of a LADIES SHOE, executed in BLACK INDIA INK and PINK and YELLOW WATERCOLOR PAINTS, on a fairly-thick, cream-beige paper stock.
On the verso, there is the WARHOL ESTATE STAMP from the ANDY WARHOL FOUNDATION in PITTSBURGH, plus a NEW YORK GALLERY STAMP, along with some "bleed-through" of the image from the picture-side. (See our last photos.)
This is a charmingly rendered original work, made with a great "whimsical" finesse...and utilizing Andy Warhol's skills as a highly in-demand illustrator in the advertising world of New York in the 1950s.
This is most definitely an ORIGINAL PAINTING by hand and NOT a litho, print or copy of any kind.
The sheet-size measures: 11 5/8" x 8 1/8" (29 1/2 cm x 20 3/4 cm).
Currently unframed.
The painting is SIGNED, in BLACK INK, in the lower-right: Andy Warhol.
Not dated, circa 1950s.
In GOOD CONDITION. Just a couple of light stains on the very left-edge of the paper, NOT intruding into the "live" picture area at all. One smaller one on the very right-edge too.
