HISTORY “The Steinbach family has worked in wood for 7 generations. 5th generation Christian Steinbach was living in the Erzgebirge (eastern Germany) at the beginning of World War II. He spent 6 years as an officer in the German tank corps. At the end of the war, the Steinbach family moved to northwest Germany. It was difficult to restart his business because the German government would not allow him to cut down trees, so he gathered every small bit of wood he could get. (He even used wooden frames of army cots.) Steinbach started carving small characters and making music boxes because they did not use as much wood as nutcrackers.”
BRAND HISTORY-Between 1945-1949, the early pieces were marked with a square red sticker with a chimney sweep and "GESCHWISTER STEINBACH HOHENHAMELN GMBH". However, stickers can come off. Sometimes a piece also stamped Western Zone in ink.
