Andre Beronneau French Impressionist Oil Painting, Fishing Boats, Sete, Listed
Item History & Price
One of the better French marine and landscape painters of the 20th century, Andre Beronneau (1886-1973) was especially well regarded for his paintings depicting fishing boats along the French coast. This beautiful example, titled "Bateaux de peche a Sete" ("Fishing Boats at Sete") is a fine representative of his technique, in its depiction of fishermen at work in this port and seaside resort on the Mediterranean. Beronneau achieved considerable recognition during his lifetime, and ...exhibited his work at the Salon des Independants in Paris between 1926 and 1935.
The painting, signed by Beronneau at the lower right, measures 18 inches by 21 inches (stretcher size), and is housed in a nice custom frame measuring a total of 25 1/2 inches by 28 1/4 inches. On the reverse of the canvas, there are various inscriptions, including the title of the painting and the name of the artist, as well as a canvas stamp reserving copyright for the artist.
The painting would benefit from a light cleaning, since it has some surface soiling and discolored varnish. There is also a small dark stain on the reverse of the canvas at the lower left (see photo 6). I am not sure whether this is evidence of an earlier restoration, since I cannot detect any inpainting when I look at the front of the picture, but it is in any case a minor detail. Otherwise, this painting is in excellent condition. The impasto surface, which Beronneau was especially well known for, is still in lovely condition.
We are offering this beautiful example of impressionist painting by a well listed French artist with an attractive buy-it-now price.
