Helen was born in Vienna, Austria. She studied at the Akdemie Fuer Angewandt Kunst as a designer, illustrator, and print maker in the studio of Professor Haerdte from 1946-1951. In 1952, she married Theodor S...iegl, Conservator of Paintings at Philadelphia Museum of Art, and moved to the United States. She became a US citizen in 1959. They had seven boys and one girl, who were models and inspiration for many of her prints.
Since 1952, Helen worked exclusively as a print maker. Her prints have appeared in over 40 books and publications including: The American Artist, Artist Proof, Christian Science Monitor, "Aesop’s Fables" and "Indian Tales" (Random House), "The Birds and The Beast Were There" (World Publishing Co.), "Earrings for Celia" "Pantheon Books". Some of the limited editions books with Helen’s original block prints are "Beastiary" published through Philadelphia Print Club (The Print Center), "Mother Goose" from Janus Press, and "Christmas Carols" from Barry Publishing. In 1990, the New York Times awarded Helen the Children’s Book Illustrator of the Year for "The Dancing Palm Tree and Other Nigerian Folk Tales" from Texas Tech University Press.
Helen showed her work in more than 200 exhibitions and one person shows around the world between 1952 and 2009. Her works are included in numerous public and private collections including: Library of Congress, National Gallery of Art, Philadelphia Print Club, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Free Library of Philadelphia, New York Public Library, Fleischer Art Memorial – Philadelphia, Santa Barbara Museum California, Sacramento Museum California, Hartford Museum Connecticut, and State Museum of New Jersey.
