Georg Erler (1871-1950) was a noted German artist who worked as a painter, graphic artist, and etcher. Erler settled in his hometown of Dresden and quickly achieved success. With the large-scale etching entitled DEVOTION OF THE MINERS BEFORE THE SHAFT, he obtained the great gold medal in 1887 and in 1901 won the two-year Roman scholarship of the Academy with another large-scale etching BETWEEN WORK. In 1902 he became one of the founding members of the artist group DIE... ELBIER. In 1909 he was a founding member of the Artists Association Dresden. From 1913 to 1937 Erler was a professor of figurative drawing at the Dresden Arts and Crafts Academy. Noted for his illustrations and cartoons featured in German journals of his day, The Kunstgewerbemuseum Dresden honored Erler in 1932 with an exhibition that showed a selection of his caricatures. Erler mastered the technique of etching masterfully. He created cityscapes, landscapes, and nudes. Many works of Erler were lost in the bombing of Dresden on February 13, 1945. The etching I'm offering here shows why Erler was selected to teach figurative drawing: it's a compelling composition that takes the artist out into the countryside. Entitled BAUERIN MIT ZIEGE (Peasant Woman with Goat), it was made around 1900 and published by the Gesellschaft fur vervielfaligende Kunst. The balancing act Erler presents between the peasant woman and what looks like a rather reluctant goat puts the focus precisely in the center of the print, with the handful of straw (see my close up photo). This is a good, heavily inked impression only mildly marred by some very mild foxing mostly in the margins (I think my photos shows some of this). The image measures 6 5/8 inches x 19 inches; the plate measures 7 1/4 inches x 10 3/4 inches; and the sheet measures 11 1/4 inches x 15 inches. A charming and well-executed portrayal of a peasant woman feeding her goat.
