An original late 19th Century oil on paper showing a grove of tall trees in a forest. The painting is signed McEvoy lower left and is inscribed, probably by the artist, on a clipped piece of paper - this inscription reads "The Three Graces/Calaveras Grove Cal./295 ft high/McEvoy". I believe the artist to be Henry Nesbitt McEvoy (1828-1914) - comments welcome. A more precise date of the painting could probably be worked out based on the height of the trees.
Co...ndition is only fair for age. As can be seen from the photos, there is some light surface damage, staining and losses. There is also a crease at the top edge and some general surface dirt. The reverse has been time stained from old wooden backing boards and there are some old pencil annotations here. The painting would probably respond well to a light clean, some minor retouching and a revarnish. The clipped title has defects similar to those of the painting.
