These gorgeous rugs were woven as utilitarian carpets,  but they are highly valued today for their authenticity as representative of Middle East weaving. .  Because of the thinness of their weave,  these rugs are often sought as wall hangings and works of art.
The antique rugs from Romania are based on the Bessarabian Kilims.  There are three regions in Romania:  Moldavia (including Bessarabia,  the former Romanian province occupied by Russia after WWII),  Oltenia and Transylvania.  Moldavian rugs are geometrically designed often utilizing the tree of life symbol.  Oltenian carpets often have a black or red background,  depicting figures and scenes,  reminiscent of Persian miniatures.  The last style,  those of central Transylvania,  is primarily influence by oriental rugs with firm borders and small  -  stylized flowers,  sometimes with birds and animals.
Antique Bessarabian rug in pile technique occupy a unique place among European carpets.  Many of the designs are floral patterns made in a naturalistic western style utilizing brown or black ground.  But others,  particularly flatweaves,  reflect the tradition of Turkish kilims from nearby Anatolia,  although in a distinctive Bessarbian palette.  In either case they are supremely decorative pieces.
Only natural fibers are used in handmade rugs.  The most common materials used for the pile are wool and cotton.  Traditionally,  spinning is done by hand.  Several strands of yarn are then plied together so that the resulting yarn is strong enough to be used for weaving.
Sheep wool is the most frequently used pile material in a hand made rug because it is soft,  durable,  easy to work with and not too expensive.  It is less susceptible to dirt than cotton,  does not react electrostatically,  and insulates against both heat and cold.  This combination of characteristics is not found in other natural fibers.  Wool comes from the coats of sheep.  Natural wool comes in colors of white,  brown,  fawn,  yellow and gray,  which are sometimes used directly without going through a dyeing process.
Cotton is used primarily in the foundation,  the warps and wefts of rugs.  Cotton is stronger than wool,  and,  when used for the foundation,  makes a carpet lie flat on the ground,  as it is not as easily distorted as woolen strings.
