& Fully Functional: Vintage IBM ThinkPad 755CD Laptop Type 9545
Item History & Price
Well I'm really enjoying reviving these vintage ThinkPads.. This one is in even better condition than the one I sold last. I'd say this one is essentially in like-new condition, but judge for yourself. You won't find one cleaner than this so if you've been waiting for an investment-quality 755CD with all accessories, this is it. I sold my other 755CD that was in worse shape, had a smaller hard disk, and half as much RAM for $430. It had a Best Offer option but someone ended up bu...ying it outright.
Up for auction is my IBM ThinkPad 755CD. This was the first laptop to come with an internal CD-ROM drive, which makes getting games, software and other files on and off the machine extremely simple compared to other laptops (or even desktops) of this era. I'm including both the internal floppy disk drive and the CD-ROM drive with the auction. This computer has the ability to warm-swap the drive between floppy and CD-ROM.. Another great feature as you can't boot from a CD-ROM on these older machines, they require a DOS floppy boot disk in order to install a new operating system via CD-ROM or HDD.
Everything on it works, I put a bunch of awesome DOS games on it so you can enjoy it straight out of the box. Compared to the other two 755CDs I've owned, this one's LCD is brighter and more vibrant. I have no idea why but I'm a little envious of whoever buys this. The only reason I'm not keeping it and selling my other unit is because all my save game data is on my main unit and I don't want to transfer it all (and forget something). Another really awesome feature to this machine is its MASSIVE hard disk - someone put a 2.2 GB hard disk in it at some point. Again, very envious. These usually come with an 810MB hard disk so you're getting almost 3x the space. It boots up quickly (quicker than mine, I did a test), the LCD hinges are nice and tight and both kickstand feet intact on the bottom side... Everything is as it should be on this machine. I took the battery out when I got it because it was corroded. I had to replace the main system board so it's got a brand new board which is great.
Listing comes with the laptop, OEM charger, a 32MB memory card (For 40MB total RAM, see photo for system specs. This is the maximum RAM for these machines) and both the floppy disk drive and the CD-ROM drive. This model has a warm-swap feature allowing the user to swap the CD-ROM for the floppy while the OS is on, just by opening up the 'hood, ' as I call it. When the hood is opened (aka keyboard popped up), the computer automatically turns itself onto some kind of BIOS-induced standby so that you can swap the drive. Once the hood is back down, the computer starts where it left off. Having the extra memory is extremely useful when trying to run more complicated pieces of software or certain games.. Sometimes these memory modules alone can sell for pretty big money.
Everything works, the floppy drive, the CD-ROM drive, both speakers, the microphone (which is another cool feature).. It's set up with the stock ThinkPad 755CD system image including the dual-boot screen on startup asking whether you want to boot into OS/2 Warp 3 or Windows 3.11. I also put a bunch of DOS games on the machine, in a folder labeled 'Software' for the new owner to use. The computer shows no codes upon startup, not even CMOS codes. It boots without hassle every time. I have spent tons of hours figuring out how to troubleshoot and fix these machines, and source replacement parts for them. Don't take it for granted this thing works and has all new parts! :-)
Please let me know if you have any questions. I'm happy to consider all reasonable offers. I'll be sure to pack everything up very carefully and plan to ship via USPS Priority Mail. Thanks for looking!
