Descr...iptionWe are proud to be able to offer a fine original hand colored engraved print by Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717). from her very important work entitled Histoire Des Insectes De L'Europe.As the granddaughter of J.T. deBry and the daughter of the well-known engraver Matthaus Merian the elder, Maria Sibylla Merian was well suited to become one of the most important natural history artists. Known not only as an accomplished artist, but also as a respected entomoligist, Merian was the first to illustrate the full life cycle of many species of butterfiles and moths. Even more extraordinary, at the age of fifty one, Merian divorced her husband and took her daughters to the dutch colony of Surinam in South America. After two years of observation she publoished her first important work Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium. These gorgeous prints are from a less well known study of Eurpoean insects. Though executed at a smaller size than the insects of Surinam, these images have the same wonderful attention to detail and charming compositions, giving them a strong visual appeal. Although Merian occasionally put aesthetic needs above scientific, these prints offer a fascinating study of botany and entomology.We have been fortunate enough to purchase a nice selection of these prints that we are offering at a fraction of the prices being offerd by on line as well as bricks and mortar dealers.
