OR, Margaret Keane?This 1960’s Dettner Lithograph (copyrighted-reproduction rights reserved) is partof the real life drama of husband, Walter, and wife, Margaret—both artists;both claiming to have painted the “Big Eyes” series in the 1950’s-1960’s.Eventually, a court issued in Margaret’s favor that SHE was the artist, and, helived the rest of his life (died at age 85) as “Known for Plagiarism”(Wikipedia: Walter Keane). In 2014 a �...�Big Eyes” movie was released chroniclinglife, lawsuit, and trial of this couple. At the bottom of the matting of thisframed black and white lithograph is printed: Walter Keane, S.F. 1960…………..”BestFriend” oil on canvas 8x22……………copyrighted-reproduction rightsreserved..Lithographed by Dettner..S.F. The story surrounding this “Big Eyes”makes it even more enchanting. There is a small chip at the top of the framewhere it was stapled. I am surmising that, since “Walter Keane’s” name isstamped on the matting, this could have been prior to their divorce in 1965 andbefore the trial proving plagiarism.
